School Headphones or School Headsets?

There is a difference between school headphones and school headsets. We often get asked the question "Am I the only person who doesn't know the difference between the two?" The answer is definitely no. We get this question all the time. Rest assured, if you are one of these people, you're not alone!

The difference between a school headphone and a school headset is that headsets typically have a microphone and headphones typically do not. There are some exceptions out there, but they do not really apply to solutions for learning environments. Many people do not distinguish between the two in conversation and that is just fine. The important time to remember this difference is when you consider purchasing them for your school, library or computer lab. 

For example, if you will be using mobile devices & interactive apps that require voice communication, you should consider school headsets with a microphone. If you don't need a microphone, you should consider school headphones which are great for just listening to audio and for assessment testing. 

There are a number of different options and features to consider when you consider school headsets with a microphone. What are your preferences? Do you prefer earbud in-ear designs that have an in-line mic? Do you prefer an over-ear headset that fit like traditional headphones with an adjustable microphone for more precise mic placement. Once you have decided what style you prefer, you will want to double-check the connection types on your existing computers and mobile devices. This way you can determine what connection type is compatible. 

School Headsets

With School Headsets, there are three main connection types:

Dual Plug: This connection has two individual plugs one for the sound and one for the microphone. These work with computers that have a designated jack just for the microphone and a separate jack for the headset. 

USB Plug: This connection has a single USB plug and connects to computers that have an available USB Port. They can help reduce compatibility issues in instances where multiple computer types are being used. 

TRRS Plug: This connection type is typically found on new laptops, computers and mobile devices including tablets and smart phones. It is a single 3.5mm plug that controls the sound and microphone. These are common with smart phones, iPads, Chromebook and Surface devices.

School Headphones

With School Headphones there are also three main connection types: 

6.3mm Plug: This connection type is found in learning environments on computers that have a jack with a 1/2" or 6.3mm plug. Adapters are available to enable cross-compatibility between different computers and devices. 

USB Plug: This connection type is popular for use with desktop and laptop computers. They enable cross-compatibility between different computer types, they eliminate the need for a sound card and work with computers that have an available USB port. 

3.5mm Plug: This connection type is also referred to as a 1/4" adapter or plug. It is considered a standard headphone plug and works with most devices that have a standard headphone jack that is 3.5mm or 1/4" in size.
